First Tee Miami Scholar, Andres Pumariega, helps team win first Atlantic 10 Championship

On April 30, 2012, the sixth-seeded George Washington golf team earned its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship this weekend after carding an 8-under par 568 for a new 36-hole program record. The Colonials unseated six-time defending champion and second-place finisher Charlotte by two strokes to earn an automatic bid to regional NCAA Tournament play. Senior Andres Pumariega, a First Tee Miami scholar, finished second overall with a two-day total of 5-under 139, including the lowest round of the tournament with a 5-under 67 on Saturday, to earn A-10 All-Conference honors and head coach Terry Shaffer (’79) was honored as the league’s Coach of the Year.

2012 Spring Break Classic Final Results

A pair of Coral Springs junior golfers prevailed in the 2012 Spring Break Golf Classic. Presented by the First Tee Miami-DAGA, the event is unique in that the overall winner of Boy’s and Girl’s receives an exemption into the Doral-Publix Junior Golf Classic, the Junior Orange Bowl, and an exemption as well as housing subsidy for the Optimist Junior Golf Championship.

Alec Herzfeld shot a final round even par 71 (72-71-143) to best first round leader Juan Yumar, Miami (69-77-146) by three shots. Carly Ray Goldstein also of Coral Springs carded a closing 72 (74-72-146) to win by 1 stroke over Colombia’s Anna Maria Bohmer (74-73-147). Local standout Julie Steinbauer, Doral, went out in 33 strokes and finished in third place with a two day total of 149 (76-73-149).
