Special Olympics 2016

It was a beautiful day today with these talented individuals. We are very proud to be part of the Special Olympics. These competitors will be practicing at our facility as they prepare to quality for the State Championships in Orlando! Congratulations to Jamila Gowdy for “The Unstoppable Scholar Award”

The First Tee Miami is proud to announce & congratulate Jamila Gowdy who was selected & awarded ’ “The Unstoppable Scholar Award” from the City of Miami-Dade's-Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez Scholars' Award Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez Miami-Dade County, Fla.

Jamila overcame a spinal fusion in the 7th grade, returning to golf, the sport that she loves, and working hard to catch up and excel. She joined her school’s golf team in 9th grade and this year became Co-Captain. She is also on the basketball team. She volunteers at the First Tee’s summer program and helps to support the Orange Bowl Committee’s Girls Sports Program. 

Jamila is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at her high school and is a member of the National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, and the Environment Club. She also holds a part time job at PortMiami, providing boarding and shore services for cruise ships. She speaks Portuguese, which allows her to communicate with passengers from Brazil.

Jamila is the President of her church’s Youth Department. She is also a Girl Scout, through which she has developed a program to support families of mobilized military persons by working with other troops to write letters to soldiers who are away from home. She is currently developing a Wounded Warrior project at her high school to raise funds to support the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded warriors in South Florida.
